GOING GREEN

Growing up in Africa, there were those moments in school when you would find yourself in a classroom, textbook in front of you and your mind focused on what you believed you were doing. Then out of nowhere (well we know where actually) darkness filled the surrounding followed by joyous jubilation from students who did not want to study, often including oneself. Power-cuts, unfortunately, are a norm in Africa.

A start-up founded by students from Cyprus International University, European University of Lefke, Copper Belt University in Kitwe and University of Zambia known as Green Belt Energy Corporation is aiming at addressing this issue internationally by investing in local bio-energy production. The enterprise incorporates a corporate social responsibility of creating an effective free food distribution system.  GBEC has designed a tool, an app that creates a synergy of youth who are willing to join the movement by Donating and Driving for change. D4Change coordinate the smooth runnıng of food distribution, it brings together a community of helpers whilst monitoring the food programme and creating a marketplace to sell renewable energy sources. Let`s not forget its special feature; a social platform to share ideas and discuss various issues that affect youth.

The app was officially launched during the Green Carpet; a fundraising and cocktail event at the Bededstan Lefkosa on May 20 2017. The Green Carpet brought together fashion designers; Evsen Dogacan of Nelipot, Fatima Salhane of M&A Magic, Zinelle Zibah of ZZ Couture, Victor Ehinmowo of Apolo et Roma and special dance performances from Studio 21. They together showcased their `green designs` whilst raising awareness of D4Change.  You can download the app now and join the movement. Go Green!
